May Finishes – A Lovely Year of Finishes

Whew! May is almost over. This month was a bear for me, how about you? I realized about a week ago that I hadn’t made any progress on my goal, which was to remake the top for my Flowering Lone Star Quilt. I am happy to announce the top is done. I am working on the back now. Here is the original quilt, I will blog later this week about the new top after I get some pictures. If it is nice out tomorrow, I will be corralling hubby into helping me!

Not-So-Wordless Wednesday

Hi Everyone and Happy Wednesday! New content for you today, unlike the last 2 days where I have filled the blog with past finishes for the Blogger’s Quilt Festival! Don’t forget you can go and vote for your favorites, if one of those happens to be one of my quilts that is absolutely awesome!

The last 4 days I have been working on my May ALYoF goal – the updated Flowering Lone Star. I was going to take a progress shot and Anne just had to jump in on the picture taking fun.

Blogger’s Quilt Festival – Applique Quilt

I decided that I wanted to enter two different categories this year in the Blogger’s Quilt Festival. You can see my first entry here, my second entry is into the Applique Category. I don’t do much hand work, so my project is machine appliqued.

I made this small wall hanging for the Modern She Made Swap on Flickr. The theme this time is Hexies which are right up my alley. I have over 1500 of them made and waiting for another 300 before I start piecing my quilt.

For this quilt I used hexies ranging in size from 1″ all the way up to 4″ (if measuring along one side). They are appliqued onto a gray Essex Linen Backing and matchstick quilted. Considering how small the quilt is I was shocked at how many bobbins I went through!

I love a good rainbow so I went scrappy rainbow on it and I also wanted it to have a nice flow, hence the spiral design.

I can say, with absolute certainty, that this will be one of the hardest quilts I ever let go of when I mail it to its new owner later this week!

Blogger’s Quilt Festival – ROYGBIV Quilt

Hi everyone! My name is Melissa and welcome to my little corner of the blogosphere! My blog is named after my daughter, her name means Bitter Sweet, hence Sew BitterSweet Designs was born. I am an aspiring pattern designer and have a few patterns for sale in my Craftsy shop. Along with patterns for sale I also have over 60 free tutorials on my tutorials page, please feel free to check them out!

I decided to enter the ROYGBIV Category for the Blogger’s Quilt Festival because I truly do have a thing for rainbows. Here is my quilt:

This quilt was made for the Riley Blake Challenge with the Modern Quit Guild. I have a love for straight line quilting and quilt this on my home machine – a Janome Horizon 7700. I used King Tut thread by Superior Threads.

One of my goals this year was to sew as much out of my stash as possible – I think in the first 4.5 months of the year I have bought fabric for only 2 projects, a hand bag that I finished 2 weeks ago and a quilt I am working on now. The backing for this quilt, utilized 2 of the fabrics from the challenge that did not fit in on the front and a lovely piece of Art Gallery solids that had been hidden in my stash for the last 2 years. I decided to use white thread on the front and back of the quilt and I have to say I love the back almost as much as the front.

Later this summer I plan to enter this into our local county fair, I live in Thurston County in Washington. It will be the first time I enter a quilt into a judged show and I am excited for the professional feedback, I think it will be an interesting experience.
